Studies of teen dating violence have focused heavily on family and peer influences, but little research has been conducted on the relationship contexts within which violence occurs. The present study explores specific features of adolescent romantic relationships associated with the perpetration of physical violence. Relying on personal interviews with a sample of adolescents, results indicate that respondents who self-report violence perpetration are significantly more likely than their non-violent counterparts to report higher levels of other problematic relationship dynamics and behaviors such as jealousy, verbal conflict, and cheating. However, we find no significant differences in levels of love, intimate self-disclosure, or perceived partner caring, and violent relationships are, on average, characterized by longer duration, more frequent contact, sexual intimacy and higher scores on the provision and receipt of instrumental support. Finally, violence is associated with the perception of a relatively less favorable power balance, particularly among male respondents. These findings complicate traditional views of the dynamics within violent relationships, add to our understanding of risk factors, and may also shed light on why some adolescents remain in physically abusive relationships. Prior research on teen dating violence TDV has documented the scope and seriousness of this public health problem O’Leary et al. There is general agreement that violence within the context of intimate relationships is emotionally and physically costly Silverman et al. Research has also focused on the demographic patterning of violence within teen relationships particularly the issue of gender disparities and symmetries e.

I accepted this challenge and together we started developing the idea of SMP-SA as a forum for politicians to meet scientists basing on the initial idea of the national Science Meets Parliament. As a group we developed the idea further to host events three times a year, choose an economically relevant scientific issue and invite selected science experts in academia and industry to Parliament House and engage with MPs and their staff members.

There was a greater turnout of MPs and political staff members than expected for a first event, especially as it was a parliamentary sitting day, and 16 science experts including SA University Deans, secondary school principals, industry organisation leaders and Australian Academy Fellows were present. In particular the challenges in increasing the uptake of senior-secondary and post-school STEM subjects by SA students. The chatter in the room was deafening and both sides were animatedly discussing STEM education; business cards were flying back and forth with promises of future dates.

Love-hungry teenagers and archaeologists agree: dating is hard. But while the difficulties of single life may be intractable, the challenge of determining the age of prehistoric artifacts and fossils is greatly aided by measuring certain radioactive isotopes. Until this century, relative dating was the only technique for identifying the age of a truly ancient object.

By examining the object’s relation to layers of deposits in the area, and by comparing the object to others found at the site, archaeologists can estimate when the object arrived at the site. Though still heavily used, relative dating is now augmented by several modern dating techniques. Radiocarbon dating involves determining the age of an ancient fossil or specimen by measuring its carbon content.

Carbon, or radiocarbon, is a naturally occurring radioactive isotope that forms when cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere strike nitrogen molecules, which then oxidize to become carbon dioxide. Green plants absorb the carbon dioxide, so the population of carbon molecules is continually replenished until the plant dies. Carbon is also passed onto the animals that eat those plants.

After death the amount of carbon in the organic specimen decreases very regularly as the molecules decay. Samples from the past 70, years made of wood, charcoal, peat, bone, antler or one of many other carbonates may be dated using this technique.

Science from the Latin word scientia , meaning “knowledge” [1] is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. Modern science is typically divided into three major branches that consist of the natural sciences e. There is disagreement, [19] [20] [21] however, on whether the formal sciences actually constitute a science as they do not rely on empirical evidence.

Science is based on research , which is commonly conducted in academic and research institutions as well as in government agencies and companies. The practical impact of scientific research has led to the emergence of science policies that seek to influence the scientific enterprise by prioritizing the development of commercial products , armaments , health care , and environmental protection.

Science in a broad sense existed before the modern era and in many historical civilizations. In particular, it was the type of knowledge which people can communicate to each other and share.

metallurgical features of twenty cast iron metalworks dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries manufactured Materials Science Forum (Volume ).

Despite the massive presence of street furniture in the urban environment, the knowledge about its evolution through the centuries is frequently ignored or neglected. This study analyses the main metallurgical features of twenty cast iron metalworks dating back to the 19 th and early 20 th centuries manufactured in cast iron foundries mainly located in Italy, France and England.

The microstructure was determined by means of optical microscopy OM , whereas the semi-quantitative chemical composition was evaluated through scanning electron microscopy SEM with energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS. The experimental results highlight the lack of a shared metallurgical culture in steel industry over the last one hundred and fifty years, since non-uniform microstructural features were observed among the specimens produced in that period in the geographical areas under study.
