Telling the truth about SME life today
Sterling silver is a traditional material that creates a fountain pen with classical looks and a powerful presence in the hand as a result of its weight. Famous brands manufacture glamorous models to share this feeling. A fountain pen is always a very personal item.
And, true to form, he introduced England to a number of fancy jewelry ranges in rolled gold and silver – and the first Yard-O-Led writing.

My grandfather Harry, a grocer in the north-western mining town of Wigan, owned a fine collection of pens and notebooks. He died when I was seven years old and, I suspect, I inherited the pens at too early an age to value them. One of these writing implements was called Yard-O-Led, a strange name that I never quite understood. I wrote it off in my young mind as a bit of Victorian quackery, designed to impress the feeble of mind.
Now, as it turns out, the story of Yard-O-Led is an interesting one. And there really was a yard of lead lurking in that small barrel — albeit in the form of twelve separate pieces, all of three inches in length. What is just as interesting is that these sterling-silver writing implements are still made today in a factory in Birmingham. They are to be found mainly in Britain at specialist writing implement stores and, occasionally, at jewellers and up-market department stores such as Harrods and Fortnum and Mason.
In he took out a patent on his pencil mechanism featuring those twelve three-inch leads.

For fans of mechanical pencils, Dave will need no introduction, but for everyone else – he’s the person behind the much-loved blog Dave’s Mechanical Pencils. As one of our favourite pencil bloggers, we were delighted when Dave agreed to write a guest post for us, all about his history with mechanical pencils, and some favourites from over the years. Over to you, Dave:. I had never really paid any attention to writing instruments, but always thought mechanical pencils were rather interesting things compared to pens and wooden pencils.
Then one day I went into a specialist retailer to buy a drafting pencil for school and was astonished to see the range of mechanical pencils available for technical drawing, art and general writing. I could not resist buying this Pentel. Slowly my interest built up and many years later I realised I had a collection and was a collector of mechanical pencils. Then along came the internet and blogging, suddenly there was world full of writing instruments and fellow enthusiasts within easy reach.
I am interested in all types of mechanical pencils, from everyday writing to luxury brands and of course technical models. All sorts of different body types, grip shapes and materials have been tried, along with various mechanisms to advance the lead and stop it breaking and so on. There is a mechanical pencil for everyone.

The Viceroy Grand is eccentric, yet refined—this an elegant pen that makes a statement. I love silver and I had to have this pen for my obnoxious oversized pen collection. The Viceroy Grand is massive —the pen itself weighs 46 grams and is mm long. It posts, too—quite well, I might add—making for a pen that is mm long and 64 grams.
Yard-O-Led is a charming company with a neat story. Their writing instruments are, impressively, made by hand by artisans in England largely in the same way they were made years ago—although fountain pens are a relatively modern addition to their lineup. Looking at two pens and being able to tell that they were obviously created by two unique artists is a special experience. Viceroy Grand pens are available in the Victorian finish, as shown, a barleycorn finish, and a pinstripe finish that is a Smythson of Bond Street exclusive, but only the Victorian finish is completely hand chased.
It fills with a standard international converter and there is plenty of room in the barrel for a long international cartridge or a spare short international cartridge, if desired. The most problematic part of this pen is the price. Would I buy it again, even after the price increase? Hell yes. The Viceroy Grand is functional art.

A few months ago I was able to get a Mascot for a good price. The Mascot is a propelling pencil made from sterling silver. This could be down to the fact that the internal mechanism works in a different way. My pencil came in a Yard-O-Led box and with Yard-O-Led instructions, but as the pen is 60 years old these might not be the original box and instructions that came with the pen.
Including leads the Mascot weighs about 28g and has a diameter of just over 8mm — round pencils tend to have a diameter of about 7.
I’m not sure what was being commemorated fifty-six years ago today, but that’s the date inscribed on this vintage Yard-O-Led pencil. Engraved.
