My criterion for a good food city is one that has amazing food at every price point. Full disclosure, I consider both of these places to be home. I visited London recently and benefited from the culinary explosion which has been going down there over the past few years. The garlic gambas and grilled squid — um, we got seconds on both. Fino is a perfectly simple, not too flashy setting with great food. My earliest food memory… Waking up on a cold frosty morning at my Nan’s house and my Grandad cooking porridge on the hob with milk and the tiniest bit of sugar melted on top. Then he’d pour the cold milk around the bowl so it would set like custard. It’s the best start to the day for energy. It’s better than Red Bull — porridge gives you wings. My store-cupboard essentials… Capers, anchovies, tomatoes, pasta, olive oil and [an assortment of] vinegars. I try to cook once a week at home but it’s hard when you’re hectic at work.

As talented an editor and writer as Reichl was, however, she couldn’t save Gourmet from the publishing world’s pessimistic number-crunchers. Conde Nast axed the once-glamorous Gourmet in favor of its other food magazine, the bright, ad-generating, family-friendly Bon Appetit. After all, she has already written three best-selling, well-received and unflinchingly truthful memoirs, starting with Tender at the Bone , which described her childhood with a mentally disturbed, food-hording mother, followed by her freewheeling life as a hippie chef turned restaurant critic in s California. Comfort Me with Apples had her touring Europe with Saveur editor Colman Andrews, getting a sentimental and culinary education at his side. Garlic and Sapphires detailed her wig-wearing, persona-creating experiments as the all-powerful restaurant reviewer at the New York Times.
